According to Gunther Anders, the bombing of Hiroshima signified the dawning of the age of the Inverted Utopia – utopians, he said imagine what they cannot achieve, but now we are inverted utopians who can achieve what we cannot imagine. But if Hiroshima cannot properly be imagined, can it be remembered? This paper explores that question through a discussion of Alain Resnais’ film Hiroshima mon Amour.

Keith Tester is Professor of Sociology at the University of Hull He has also been Professor of Sociology at Kyung Hee University in Seoul. He is the author of a number of books on the sociology of culture and has written widely about – and with – Zygmunt Bauman.
