Join Nikos Papastergiadis and Emily Floyd for a discussion on contemporary art and the archive in the wake of the semi-destruction of the Lukács Archívum. On May 24, 2018 the last research associate at the Georg Lukács Archives of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences was banned from the archives after 28 years of employment. Despite local and international protest, the Academy, with the assistance of its own library, closed the archives of the world-renowned Hungarian philosopher, which has existed since 1972. The locks on the doors were replaced, and the archives effectively ceased to exist as a venue attracting international interest and researchers. Nikos and Emily will discuss expanded possibilities for the archive, drawing on Agnes Heller’s relational approach to philosophy and sharing pamphlets and posters from their respective library projects Cornelius Castoriadis: Notebook, for dOCUMENTA (13) and Labour Garden, for the 56th Venice Biennale.

This event is a part of a series of events presented by Thesis Eleven this coming November in both Melbourne and Sydney celebrating the life and work of Hungarian philosopher Agnes Heller.
