The editors of Thesis Eleven would like to express their support for Faculty of Arts staff at Macquarie University affected by proposed job cuts. As a journal of critical theory and historical sociology, we particularly extend our support to staff in sociology, politics, history, and gender studies disciplines.
Thesis Eleven has a long relationship with Macquarie’s School of Communication, Society and Culture. The School is home to several of our long-term friends and two current editors.
Macquarie University’s proposed restructure comes on top of similar cuts made to humanities, arts and social science programs (HASS) at Australian universities in recent years, including University of Western Australia and Australian Catholic University with large restructures pending at Australian National University, Western Sydney University, and University of Technology Sydney amongst others. Thesis Eleven expresses deep concern at the systemic erosion of HASS in Australian tertiary institutions and commits to advocating for social theory in its broadest sense as it is cultivated across the social sciences and liberal arts.
